It was half way into the fall season and I received a call about a squirrel that had chewed its way into a cabin attic in a near by state park. So I packed my truck with traps and other equipment I thought I may need. Better to have more than not enough I always say.

Tim the park ranger led my to the cabin and I could see right away the softball sized hole in the side of the cabin. Piece of cake I thought as I approached the cabin ladder in hand.

I threw up the ladder and began to climb with flashlight in hand to investigate the opening. Can anyone figure out were I made a mistake?

As I turned the flashlight on and peeked into the hole I found what I should have figured I would find, A squirrel and she was not happy!

Again it was half way thru fall and I had a bulky jacket on but it was unzipped so I could climb the ladder a little easier and as that light hit the squirrel she did what any scared squirrel would do. She tried to escape and escape she did. She ran out of the hole a crossed my chest and straight into the back of my jacket. Now I am a seasoned wildlife removal professional but when faced with a wild squirrel in your jacket against your skin and about twenty feet up in the air certain thoughts will run through your mind trust me!

I tried remain calm and eventually the squirrel worked its way out of my jacket and was gone. I climbed down the ladder to receive laughter and heckling from the rangers and learned a valuable lesson. Since then I trap the squirrel first and then investigate the damage.

Even squirrel removal can be dangerous and difficult. It is always best to have a professional to remove your squirrel problem. Trap , remove and then exclude the squirrel to prevent future occurrences .

I have had many calls where the homeowner is frantic and screaming

” I hear scratching in my walls!! what could it be?”  and I would calm them by asking key questions and determining the culprit.

More often then not in Akron it is a Squirrel that has entered and made a nest in the attic, soffit or even your chimney! Squirrel removal by trapping with humane traps are a key way to start the eviction process. Once the squirrel has been removed it is important to have an exclusion or repair work done to prevent future occurrences from happening.
